Ban functional foods, says CSPI

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a Washington, DC-based consumer activist group, is calling on the FDA to halt the sale of dozens of functional foods it says contain ingredients not considered safe by the agency.

In addition, CSPI slammed what it called false and misleading claims about these products.

"We need more vigorous [Food and Drug Administration] enforcement of current laws on label claims," said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, speaking at a CSPI press conference.

Not surprisingly, the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) and the National Food Processors Association defended functional foods, noting they are, in fact, foods and therefore subject to existing food safety regulatory requirements. GMA food scientist Stacey Zawel, Ph.D. labeled CSPI's "frenzied" call for product bans an overreaction.
