Nutrition labeling for fresh meat

Packages of all fresh meat and poultry would be required to bear the same nutrition labeling as processed and frozen meat and poultry under legislation introduced by Rep.

Nita Lowey (D-NY). The bill directs the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) to require such labeling within one year. Currently, USDA allows supermarkets to display charts with the nutrition information in lieu of package labeling. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, DC-based consumer advocacy group, praised the legislation, saying it will ensure that consumers get the facts about fat in meat. A CSPI survey of the 20 largest grocery chains found that while some chains provided nutrition information on packages of ground beef, others did not.
