Trans fat labeling proposal

The National Food Processors Assn. wants to extend the comment period for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s proposed trans fat labeling rule by 90 days, to May 15, 2000.

FDA proposes to require inclusion of the amount of trans fat on the nutrition panel. NFPA says it needs the extra time to survey its members on several scientific and technical issues, as well as the economic impact of such a labeling requirement.

NFPA noted that a trans fat labeling requirement would not affect all packaged food products, but it believes FDA underestimated the number that will be affected. The economic impact will be based on cost components that include analytical costs, administrative costs, potential reformulation costs, printing costs and the value of any discarded label and package inventory.
