Summit Media Groupās Greener Package and the American Institute of Chemical Engineersā (AIChEās) Institute for Sustainabilityāproducers of Sustainable Packaging Symposium 2011 and 2012āare again combining forces to produce a new, one-day event focused on cutting-edge issues in Waste-to-Energy (WTE). The Waste-to-Energy Exchange, scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the New York Institute of Technologyās Auditorium on Broadway in New York City, will include presentations from industry and academic experts on the potential impact of WTE processes.
WTE is one of the most controversial topics in the sustainable packaging environment, yet it is beginning to be recognized as an alternative approach to renewable energy. During the event, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., presenters will discuss:
ā¢ The sources of waste for WTE and opportunities for packagers
ā¢ Obstacles and hurdles to WTE implementation and infrastructure
ā¢ Measuring impactsāLife-cycle assessment and total cost assessment
ā¢ Emerging technologies and horizon issues
Scheduled speakers include John Williams of HDR Engineering, who will offer an introduction on solid waste as a replacement opportunity in a resource-limited global future; Marco Castaldi, assistant professor of earth and environmental engineering at Columbia University, who will discuss how recycling and WTE are complementary technologies that, when optimized through a perfected municipality infrastructure, promise to eliminate the current value proposition of the traditional landfill; and Paul Gilman, senior vice president and chief sustainability officer of Covanta, who will describe the infrastructure needed to effectively manage solid waste. A representative from Earth911.com will provide statistics on recycling in the U.S. and will show where opportunities for WTE may exist.
