Oatly Frozen Dessert is Plant-Based from Product through Packaging

Using oats rather than cow’s milk for its frozen dessert, Oatly also opts for a paperboard ice-cream pint container with a coating made from sugarcane rather than petroleum.

Oatly Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert
Oatly's Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert uses paperboard pint packaging that uses a biopolymer coating to resist moisture.

Following on the heels of Coconut Bliss’s pioneering use last year of a biopolymer-coated ice cream board—Sentinel from Evergreen Packaging—for its pint packaging, Oatly Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert has followed suit. Through its converting partner, Stanpac Packaging, Oatly is using Sentinel for the pint packaging for its range of seven Oatly Frozen oat-based dessert flavors in order to support its focus on environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Typically, paperboard packaging for products such as ice cream, milk, and frozen food, is covered with a petroleum-based polyethylene coating to provide moisture-resistance. The coating on Sentinel Ice Cream Board is sugarcane-based polyethylene. Evergreen’s Sentinel line of paperboard products overall are made from paper derived from trees in forests where responsible forest practices are used and where overall growth exceeds use. The combination of the board and the sugarcane-based coating therefore makes the pint packaging fully renewable, since both come from sources that can be regenerated. According to Evergreen, Sentinel offers excellent converting performance, superior strength, and outstanding print quality. No change to existing converting equipment was required to use Sentinel.
