Metsä Board has updated its strategic sustainability targets for 2030. The update includes changes to existing and new targets focusing on areas such as logistics emissions, personnel diversity, and occupational safety.

The previous update to the targets was made two years ago when measures improving the biodiversity and health of forests were included, as well as initiatives promoting fossil-free production at Metsä Board’s mills. Since then, the achievement of targets has been monitored with the help of a comprehensive set of indicators. Several key successes have been achieved to date; for example, the share of certified wood fiber of all wood fiber sourced has risen to 92%.

“Our updated target for certified wood fiber is 100%,” said Markku Leskelä, SVP, Development at Metsä Board. “In terms of fossil-free production, our target has already been very ambitious. 89% of the energy we used in 2024 was fossil-free, and our target is to continue to reach 100% by 2030.”

Reporting according to the updated targets will begin in 2025. The sustainability targets align with Metsä Board's strategy and Metsä Group's sustainability targets. Updates to the sustainability targets were based on a double materiality assessment carried out in 2024.

Metsä Board's new or revised 2030 sustainability targets are:

  • Raise the target for the share of certified wood fiber to 100%. The previous target of over 90% was reached in 2023.
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from logistics procured by Metsä Board by 30% per ton kilometer compared to the 2022 level (Scope 3, Category 4).
  • Exclude wood raw materials and purchased pulp from the monitoring of fossil-free raw materials and packaging materials so that the progress of other fossil-free raw materials can be monitored more easily.
  • The zero accidents at work target now also covers contractor employees in addition to the company's own personnel.
  • Employee satisfaction will be measured annually with the commitment index, while the ethics index will assess the realization of an ethical corporate culture. In addition, the Metsä for All index measures the employee experience of how diversity, equality and inclusion principles are implemented.
  • Increase the share of women in leadership roles to 35% instead of the previous 30%. At the same time, the definition of leadership roles will also be widened.
