House: Delay OHSA's ergonomics standard Single food agency

Representatives of both the National Food Processors Assn. (NFPA) and GMA told a Senate subcommittee that a coordinated approach is preferable to a single food safety agency.

The subcommittee is examining proposals to combine the federal government's food safety efforts in one agency rather than have them spread among more than a dozen departments and agencies. Nutrition labeling provides a precedent with both FDA and USDA enforcing virtually identical labeling rules, says Dr. Rhona Applebaum, NFPA's executive vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs.
