A mislabeled carton or a missed barcode isn't just an inconvenience for a contract packager. It represents a recall risk, a client relationship on the line, and a regulatory liability. variopack Lohnfertigungen GmbH, a Nidda, Germany-based co-packer, had an approach that could translate to North America, too.
One of Germany's leading full-service contract packagers, variopack serves food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and household hygiene clients. Across more than 40 production rooms and a constantly shifting mix of packaging designs, similar layouts and minor text changes made deviations difficult for variopack workers to catch by eye.
The company's previous inspection process for printed material including labels and packaging was time-consuming and depended heavily on individual employee concentration and experience, but that risk profile doesn't scale well against growing regulatory pressure. variopack holds IFS Food certification, an organic certification, and a manufacturing license under Germany's Medicines Act, so catching a print error after delivery wasn't an option for it.
Automating…and keeping the humans
To solve the problem, variopack worked with EyeC, a Hamburg-based supplier of automated print inspection and quality control systems for the packaging, labeling, and printing industries. The company adopted EyeC's Proofiler 600 DT, a scanner-based system that digitally compares printed materials against approved PDF references, flagging deviations in text, graphics, colors, and codes across films, cartons, labels, boxes, and inserts.
For variopack, the priority from the outset was clear: any new system had to support quality staff, not sideline them. Beyond technical capability, the company weighed solutions on ease of use, flexibility, and how well they'd integrate into existing production workflows — not just whether they could catch errors.
Such an approach could address the problems of North American co-packers facing similar staffing pressures. With QA teams stretched across more SKUs and tighter timelines, automated inspection offers a way to free up staff for exception handling and technical judgment calls, rather than adding headcount just to keep pace with manual comparison work.

variopack reports it can now run 10 to 20 inspections a day, largely on a random-sampling basis. The results speak to why the investment is worth weighing for co-packers facing similar pressures.

Now, clearly defined acceptance criteria have made deviations easier to catch consistently, cutting down on costly surprises like rework or recalls. Because inspections happen on-site and quickly, approvals come faster too, shortening turnaround times and speeding up order processing overall. Perhaps most significant, though, is the audit trail the system builds in: every inspection is documented in a reproducible format, giving variopack a paper trail that satisfies both internal quality standards and GMP requirements.
That last point may matter most as regulatory scrutiny increases. And as co-packers increasingly need to prove traceability, not just practice it, systems that generate reproducible records do double duty, catching errors while building documentation regulators and brand customers expect.
variopack's experience reflects a broader shift in contract packaging. As SKU counts climb and regulatory scrutiny tightens across food, pharma, and other regulated categories on both sides of the Atlantic, co-packers are re-examining inspection processes once built entirely on manual review.
