The 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance announced that the Paperboard Packaging Council has awarded 13 consumer goods packages that use 100% recycled paperboard in PPC’s 60th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition (see packworld.com/go/c085).

Standards-of-identity changes sought
The National Yogurt Assn. filed a petition asking FDA to revoke the standards of identity for low-fat yogurt and nonfat yogurt; amend the standard of identity for yogurt, including incorporation of provisions for low-fat and nonfat yogurt; and amend the standard of identity for cultured milk in numerous ways, including allowing the use of the alternate term “fermented milk.”

Nuts to you
FDA gave the nod to the first of its qualified claims when it allowed packages of almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, and peanuts to contain the statement: “Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 oz per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.” The label must also tell consumers to check the back label for full calorie and fat information.

We recently read about some communities that are shifting the way they or their contracted companies handle curbside recyclables. Skokie, IL, has joined a number of other communities in the Chicago area—and I’m sure elsewhere—that are no longer requiring consumers to separate materials they put out for recycling.
