COOL update

The House voted to prohibit mandatory country-of-origin labeling for meat products as part of a spending bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and FDA.

Last year’s farm bill required mandatory labeling beginning in September 2004 for some meat products, fish, fruits, and vegetables. The meat exemption is expected to have a harder time in the Senate. Meanwhile, food industry organizations, including the Food Marketing Institute, America Frozen Food Institute, National Grocers Assn., and GMA, urged Congress toward a voluntary COOL.
