Loma: X-ray inspection system

Designed to provide product integrity, ease of cleaning, and reduced maintenance in food packaging lines, Loma’s X⁵ x-ray redesigned inspection system also delivers maximum uptime in round-the-clock manufacturing sites while identifying and rejecting the smallest contaminants at line speeds of up to 394 ft./min.

The rounded, sloping surfaces of the system help ensure that food particles and wash-down droplets cannot accumulate on its surfaces.  Additionally impermeable seals have been added to the x-ray cabinet to prevent water ingress.

This means cleaning is both quick and effective. A new tubular framework, made from high-quality 304 grade stainless steel, is equally easy to clean and is robust enough to withstand harsh working conditions.

The new X⁵ system is powered by a Windows-based operation system. This allows the X⁵ to deliver accurate, reliable product control.

The X⁵ uses Adaptive Array Technology (AAT) which dynamically tailors resolution, depth, and scaling.  AAT eliminates the need to specify the diode array pixel size as the X⁵ will adjust from 0.4mm, 0.8mm, and 1.6mm to give the best detection performance for the product.

The X⁵'s touch screen has been designed and tested to IP69K, for the harshest environments and wash down specifications.

Contaminants such as metals, glass, PVC, bone, rubber, stones, and ingredient clumps are automatically detected, and the affected packs diverted from the line for investigation. Under- and over-weight packs can also be eliminated from the packing line, along with irregular and improperly packaged items, and packs with incorrect content levels. Inspection data can be automatically monitored and extracted to provide an effective and reliable audit trail for each production run.

The problem of lengthy conveyor belt changes has been solved by introducing a quick release mechanism, mounted on a gas strut for operator safety.   This allows the conveyor belt to be changed within a few minutes.  The belt itself is toughened for long life, even in heavy-duty applications.  It comes in a choice of widths: 300, 500, and 600mm to suit individual requirements.

The X⁵ withstands multi-shift operations in challenging manufacturing environments. A sideways-opening door provides safe and easy access to the cabinet interior for quick serviceability.

The X⁵ also delivers a “green” bonus: high-quality visual images with energy-efficient power consumption. There are a number of cooling options to suit individual applications and the innovative energy-saving heat exchange system delivers qualaity thermal dissipation.

The control panel, housed in a brushed stainless steel cabinet as standard, features an intuitive 12-in. color touch-screen with USB connectivity. Instead of the usual lamp stack, the new X⁵ also incorporates a clear – and easily cleaned – dome signal lamp which displays the unit’s status at a glance.
