New UCC variable-length codes coming

As early as next month, the Uniform Code Council (Lawrenceville, NJ) will begin issuing variable-length UCC company prefixes for only UCC-12 identification numbers that begin with the numerals one, eight or nine.

The new approach gives members a globally unique system to identify their company and the products they market, while it also permits the UCC to better manage the UCC-12 ID number capacity.

The new system will not affect current Universal Product Code users or those using the traditional 12-digit UPC symbology or bar codes. It will help bring the UCC system closer to its European counterpart, EAN Intl., which already uses a variable-length company prefix structure.
