NFPA on EC's claims on food

Responding to a draft proposal on European Council regulation of nutrition and health claims on food products, the National Food Processors Assn. said it supports a harmonized approach to provide for nutrient content and health claims.

It encouraged a science-based approach that allows truthful claims that can be scientifically substantiated.

NFPA took issue with several provisions in the document, particularly those related to the establishment of nutrient profiles and those that unnecessarily restrict the use of widely accepted guidance or advice from government or health authorities for foods, food groupings, or categories. NFPA urged that the EC regulation harmonize with the international standards of Codex Alimentarius.
