Package is key for Keystone

Hair care and cosmetics manufacturer Keystone Laboratories wanted to make a strong entrance into the market with its new Opal Glow(TM) alpha hydroxy-based skin care line, aimed primarily though not exclusively at African Americans.

So the Memphis, TN-based company designed an unusual hexagonal carton that should attract considerable attention. "Corporate buyers are getting hit left and right with alpha hydroxy products," says David Malchow, Keystone's director of operations and sales. "We felt that we had to create some excitement from a packaging standpoint." Keystone chose Engraph (Charlotte, NC) to assist them in designing four hexagonal cartons, some holding bars of soap, others holding glass jars. Graphics, helping to convey an upscale feel, include a hot-stamped foil logo. Engraph prints the .016 SBS board offset in three colors with a water-based coating and hot stamps it with a silver foil. Engraph then die-cuts, glues and sends the flat cartons to Keystone. The Opal Glow line is being introduced this month at the Barber and Beauty Show in Las Vegas, NV. The company anticipates national distribution.
