Protecting capsules and tablets from oxidation

For Los Angeles-based Quelle Derm, guarding against oxidation is an essential function of the packaging specified for the firm's Total Skin Care System.

Based on the concept that healthy skin stems from a healthy diet, the three-part system includes Pro-Biotic Capsules and Nutrient Tablets. These are unusual in that they are ingested, whereas most skin care systems are applied topically, as is the third part of the Quelle Dermé system, an aloe-based topical lotion. Both the capsules and the tablets are sensitive to oxidation, so a Fresh Pax oxygen absorber from Multiform Desiccants (Buffalo, NY) is included in the double-walled polypropylene (outside)/polystyrene (inside) jars supplied by Santa Fe Plastics (Santa Fe, CA). A foam liner from Material Fabricators (Buellton, CA) is an additional barrier against oxidation that also provides tamper-evidence. It measures 20 mils, says the company. Quelle Derm total Skin Care System is just being introduced and is currently available through mail-order. Suggested retail price for the three-container system is $50.
