Dimensional Doritos pack gains inspiration from triangular-shaped snack

From PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay Division, the first-of-their-kind and newest Doritos offerings “add another snacking dimension for fans, complete with unique multidimensional packaging inspired by the iconic triangle-shaped Doritos tortilla chips,” according to Plano, TX-based Frito-Lay. “The sturdy, portable packaging can be opened and closed for snack sessions throughout the day.”

The shaped paperboard container—with an inner barrier liner that appears to be foil-based—includes printed graphics that show consumers how to reclose the pack by tucking a corner into a slot on the package.

Product and packaging design agency Product Ventures designed the package structure. Says PV, “For over a decade, Product Ventures has been instrumental in creating many of Frito-Lay's award-winning structural package designs. The sturdy, portable packaging can be easily opened with a simple squeeze for instant access.” Meanwhile, PepsiCo's R&D Snacks Packaging group, in collaboration with Graphic Packaging Intl., worked on pack production and development.

Although both Doritos offerings contain 3 oz of product, the Crunch Mix package stands about 2 in. taller than the Crunch Nuts, reportedly due to product density as the Mix includes larger 3-D triangle and corn stick products.

“We know there’s a strong passion for Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch flavors, with fans passionately taking sides over which flavor they love best,” says Ryan Matiyow, Senior Director of Marketing, Frito-Lay North America. “Now we’re giving them another way to enjoy our boldest and longest-standing flavors—in the form of Doritos Crunch Nuts and Crunch Mix peanut snacks perfect for on-the-go occasions.”

Doritos Crunch Nuts includes roasted peanuts wrapped in a crunchy Doritos Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch-flavored shell that delivers a bold burst of flavor. Doritos Crunch Mix is loaded with Crunch Nuts and a variety of other flavorful bites — including 3-D triangles, puffs, pretzel bites and corn sticks, and is also seasoned with Doritos Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch flavors. The Crunch Mix adds to the brand’s Mix lineup, which includes different Doritos shapes and flavors in one bag for a multi-sensory experience. Both varieties are available in convenience stores and other retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $1.99.
