CSPI wants limit on supplement claims

Allowing labels of untested dietary supplements to contain the same claims as labels of nonprescription drugs that have been tested and found safe and effective is “crazy,” says CSPI.

The consumer group is petitioning FDA to repeal portions of its new dietary supplement regulation to forbid or qualify such claims. FDA already has told supplement manufacturers not to make claims about morning sickness and pregnancy.

CSPI says similar restrictions should be imposed for claims on supplement labels like “for the relief of occasional sleeplessness,” “for relief of upset stomach” and “for the prevention of nausea, vomiting or dizziness associated with motion.” If such claims are allowed on supplements, labels should at least bear a statement that the product has not been found to be safe by FDA.
