Areas of challenge remain

To be successful in outsourcing secondary packaging operations, product manufacturers and co-packers will need to solve some lingering challenges. Three challenges that respondents mentioned most often were quality, costs, and timeliness.

Responses to an open-ended question in the Contract Packaging-Saddle Creek Corp. survey addressed quality issues ranging from technical qualifications, adhering to product-quality standards, and consistency to service performance. For respondents who cited costs, areas of concern continue to be labor, transportation, and materials. Timeliness considerations include speed-to-market, on-time delivery, and tight turnaround times.

About half of the written responses regarding challenges mentioned quality and reliability.

CPG companies looking to outsource their secondary packaging operations may want to consider approaching 3PL providers to address these challenges. With their integrated range of services, 3PL companies present another option for simplifying complexity in the supply chain.
