Environmental bills aplenty in Massachusetts

Several packaging-related bills introduced in the Massachusetts legislature last year may get renewed attention this year in an attempt to win support of environmental groups in this election year.

For example, one bill requires all packaging sold in Massachusetts to contain a recycled content label that includes the total annual weighted average percentage of recycled content and post-consumer recycled content contained in the package. This label must be of conspicuous size and in a conspicuous place on the package label. So far, no outright packaging bans have been introduced, although last year saw a bill that banned the use of packaging that is not recyclable as of January 1, 2000. Some exceptions were provided for packaging that was source reduced, recycled or required for health and safety reasons. Another bill required packaging to be "environmentally acceptable." c
