Video: Roberts PolyPro improves the packaging sustainability of its handles

Roberts PolyPro has developed a new two-pack bottle handle that decrease materials sourced and increases pallet utilization. The overall source reduction translates into a 26% lower cost for these new HDPE handles designed for carrying two-gallon jugs of refrigerated product.

Roberts PolyPro, powered by Pro Mach, will feature at Pack Expo 2013, September 23-25 in Las Vegas, the company’s new two pack HDPE handles for gallon jugs. These handles break new ground in terms of sustainable packaging with a 26 percent reduction in cost as compared to last generation Roberts PolyPro two pack handles, 28 percent reduction in material sourced, and 22 percent greater pallet utilization for driving down transportation costs and impacts. Roberts PolyPro found that the new handles also performed better than the handles they are replacing. “In our packaging lab drop tests, we measured an 86 percent improvement in performance,” said Chris Turner, Sales Director. “Roberts PolyPro customers benefit by acquiring a more sustainable handle at less cost and consumers receive a convenient handle that performs better for carrying two gallons of product. On top of that fewer shipments are needed to deliver a higher number of handles.”

The company’s extruded handles and multi-pack carriers consume on average 5 to 35 percent less resin compared to injection molded products. Roberts PolyPro products are made from extruded HDPE resin and, when used with either PET or HDPE bottles, the entire package — bottles and handle — is 100 percent recyclable. Roberts Polypro handles are customizable, giving the packer the ability to distinguish product from the competition.

Roberts PolyPro orients multipack handles before shipment and in the case of single bottle handles uses a patented process of welding the handles together prior to shipment. On average, this process results in 40 percent more handles per pallet than loose handles shipped in bulk. The increase in units per pallet significantly decreases shipping costs, improves cube utilization, reduces the amount of corrugated board required, and lowers over-the-road fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. There is also less damage to handles during shipment.
