Seen at EXPO PACK Mexico 2018: Corrugated inserts for source reduction

Source reduction is one of the most common themes overheard at EXPO PACK México 2018 as so-called "Eco Projects" become more and more common.

12-pack cases of capped 1-L milk cartons use inserted corrugated in a shrink bundle instead of a corrugated case.

While not yet fully commercialized, Sello Rojo (Red Seal), Guadalajara, is simultaneously looking to reduce corrugated usage and improve stacking stability of its 12-pack cases of capped 1-L milk cartons. By using corrugated inserts inside a film shrink-wrapped bundle instead of a corrugated case, the company will effectively reduce weight, reduce material usage, and reduce material input costs.

The pack seen here was bundled by PolyPack’s PH Series of shrink bundlers. The machine uses a main pusher and seal bar designed for wrapping individual products as well as for collating products into multipack configurations. These machines are available with various infeed and collation modules, and with an integrated pad dispenser to create pad-supported shrink packs.

“We have many more projects going on right now in Mexico and Latin America that they call ‘Eco Projects,’” says Emmanuel Cerf, VP sales and marketing, PolyPack. “They want to save both the environment, and save money doing it. By reducing consumables, they can accomplish both.”
