More country-of-origin opposition

Opponents of the U.S. Customs Service's proposed mandatory front-panel country-of-origin marking picked up two strong consumer-oriented allies when both Washington, DC-based consumer advocacy group Public Voice for Food and Health Policy and the National Consumers League (NCL) submitted comments against the requirement.

"Country-of-origin labeling need not be on the front panel," said Public Voice. "As long as the marking is legible and indelible and appears in a conspicuous place, both the statutory requirement and the needs of consumers will have been met." NCL noted that, as a result of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, vital consumer information appears on the back or side panel of the package. Rejecting front panel marking, NCL said, "A consistent approach in how food labeling information is presented will best serve consumer interests."
