FTC looks at lightbulb labeling

It's enough to make regulatory reformers smile. The FTC is reviewing its rules to determine if they are still needed. The 1970 Light Bulb Rule is among the latest to undergo scrutiny.

The rule requires light bulb packages to disclose the wattage, lumens and life of the bulbs, and requires certain data be disclosed. The Commission asked for public comment on whether the rule should be amended to reduce or eliminate overlap with new amendments to the Appliance Labeling Rule that also requires disclosures on light bulb packages. To help consumers choose energy-saving lightbulbs, manufacturers must stress a bulb's light output or lumens before wattage and lifespan. FTC also wants to determine if the Light Bulb Rule is still necessary, as well as its costs and benefits to both consumers and manufacturers.
