More U.S.-Canada harmonization

GMA president C. Manly Molpus called on the governments of the United States and Canada to work toward greater harmonization of regulatory standards to promote increased trade and trade efficiency.

Differences can be overcome by either harmonization of regulatory approaches or mutual recognition of labeling, he said.

GMA and its Canadian counterpart, Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada, are working together closely in opposing a proposal by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency requiring that food labels disclose the percentage by weight of any ingredient, component, or class of ingredients needed to describe the food. Such a requirement would disclose proprietary information, they claim. In addition, such declarations would be little understood by consumers who have no concept of ingredient percentage.
