French vintner aims to take wine in new directions

Boisset Family Estates is getting away from the traditional glass bottle and going with a plastic bottle and a Tetra Pak container. Aluminum containers might be next.

Packaging has evolved in many categories in recent years. Even in traditionally low-innovation categories such as mustard and sugar, shoppers have seen the introduction of glass jars and handled plastic containers.

Yet innovation has been harder to fine in other categories, including wine. Bag-in-box and other packaging forms have made some noise in the category, but glass bottles with a basic cork, cap, and label still dominate the shelves.

But as Heather Stober Fleming points out on SouthCoast Today.com, some vintners are attempting to shake things up in wine packaging. One of them is Boisset Family Estates in France. Its Yellow Jersey line of fine wines come in a 750-mL bottle. It packages French Rabbit in a 1-L Tetra Pak container. And the company also is exploring the possibility of wine in aluminum containers.
