Automated Packaging Systems expands its Six Sigma initiatives

Automated Packaging Systems is expanding its Six Sigma quality program to provide advanced quality initiatives in its plastics manufacturing business.

The company manufactures genuine Autobag bag-on-a-roll materials at multiple facilities, where specifications for uniformity and quality exceed those established by the Flexible Packaging Association.

Autobag films are well known for their quality and wide range of materials for diverse bag packaging applications. Automated Packaging is furthering its commitment to world-class bag manufacturing with these new Six Sigma quality programs. Twenty two employees, including quality managers, engineers, production supervisors and materials development managers, from four different US manufacturing facilities were selected for Six Sigma training. These employees have completed a minimum of 48 hours of training in the use of Six Sigma tools to become certified Green Belts.

David Kaiser, Technical Director - Plastics for Automated Packaging says, “Six Sigma processes have proven to be effective in improving the quality of operations by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing the variability in manufacturing. Six Sigma utilizes a set of statistical quality management methods and creates an infrastructure of people within an organization who are experts in solving the most challenging problems.” Kaiser is a certified Black Belt in Six Sigma and has completed over 200 hours of dedicated training and has successfully completed multiple black belt projects. He and his staff lead the instruction for this training initiative.

The Six Sigma program is designed to solve problems and reduce variations in manufacturing and business processes using statistical data to Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC). Automated Packaging’s new, expanded Six Sigma team will be analyzing opportunities to improve the quality of bag films and manufacturing processes focusing on defect prevention.
