Organic baby snacks come in redundant Method packs

"Pure serendipity." That's how Shazi Visram, cofounder and CEO of HappyBaby, Brooklyn, NY, describes the events that led to her company's use of rigid plastic containers from home care company Method for its Organic Puffs finger food for babies.

The hourglass-shaped, cylindrical, high-density polyethylene containers manufactured for use as Method wipes packaging are now being deployed with vibrant flip-top lids and colorful shrink-sleeve labels to hold 2.1 oz of whole grain puffs snacks for babies.

Says Visram, "We are a really small company dedicated to creating products that are socially and environmentally responsible in every way. But sometimes it's difficult because we don't have the R&D budget and resources that a larger company might have.

"When we were launching the puffs, we were really excited about the product. What we hoped to do is buy a mold of an hourglass-shaped container that could easily dispense the puffs. But when we went out to start sourcing the mold and packaging, we realized that it was going to be prohibitively expensive.

"So we got creative. My partner and cofounder, Jessica Rolph, who manages our operations, suggested we ask Method if we could pay to use the mold from their wipes packaging. Method is such an incredibly cool company. They are on the cutting edge of everything in terms of reducing waste and the carbon footprint and providing people with really high-quality, aesthetically pleasing items."

Coincidentally, Method had just discontinued the use of the wipes container in favor of a flexible pouch package. Not only was the home care company willing to part with the mold, but they also had "hundreds of thousands" of unused containers close to where the puffs product would be packed-off, says Visram. "And so, we struck a deal to use that packaging that had already been created and was not going to go to use."

The white, HDPE container, from a proprietary supplier, is made from 25% post-consumer recycled content and is 100% recyclable, Visram relates. In addition, it is BPA-free—a growing concern for baby-food buyers. These green package attributes are highlighted on the flexo-printed sleeve label designed by ann-design.
