Plastic makes strides in Brazilian and Mexican food/beverage packaging

The many benefits of plastic packaging are cited as the reason for the surge in its use in Brazil and Mexico.

The plastic packaging market earned revenues of $5.27 billion in 2005. By 2012, the revenue earned from plastic packaging could exceed $7.22 billion, according to Frost & Sullivan. Some segments of the food and beverage market will see substantial growth because of plastic packaging, especially mineral and flavored water, exported fruit and vegetables, and ready-to-eat food. Advanced packaging technologies including modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and "intelligent packaging," which offers auto cooling and heating features, are also being used to capitalize on the growth of various products in the Brazilian and Mexican food and beverage industry.
