Rule on wood packaging takes effect

As of September 16, 2005, imported solid wood packaging materials must have been heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide in order to enter the United States.

It’s all part of an international effort to prevent the spread of tree-killing bugs.

The international guideline signed by 40 nations applies only to solid-wood packaging that is at least one-quarter inch thick, not particle board or plywood. Inspectors will look for a stamp certifying the wood has been treated. A number of countries began restricting solid-wood imports well in advance of the deadline. The U.S. will begin in September, though Canada and the U.S. have exempted each other.
