MyPyramid unveiled

MyPyramid, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new food guide symbol and interactive food guidance system, speaks to the need to take an individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle that includes sound food choices and regular exercise.

It incorporates the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans released by USDA and Health and Human Services in January. The symbol visually represents the recommended proportion of foods from each food group, as well as making smart food choices in every food group and engaging in physical activity. A child friendly version of MyPyramid for teachers and children is under development. The MyPyramid website (www.mypyramid.gov) offers interactive activities that provide individuals with personalized recommendations.

The Grocery Manufacturers of America announced it would help promote the new food guidance system with a multi-pronged effort that includes using product labels, marketing campaigns, and other resources to indicate how a product meets the Food Guide’s nutrition recommendation.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest liked the Dietary Guidelines, but said the new pyramid doesn’t clearly communicate the information. It said USDA has made the advice more complicated than it needs to be.
