Canadian drug plant takes on low-cost competition. . .

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals is pumping $6.1 million into a St. Laurent, Quebec plant that manufacturers, packages and distributes Advil, Centrum. and Dristan.

The upgrades in manufacturing skills will allow the plant to fight off low-cost competition from Latin America and Asia. The government of Quebec is helping with a $1.6 million grant. Employment Minister Sam Hamad says the life sciences sector is crucial to Quebec's future, and wants to stem the flow of outsourced jobs to Puerto Rico, Brazil, Mexico, Ireland, India, and China.
