Irradiating hot dogs?

In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, American Meat Institute president J. Patrick Boyle applauded the proposed rule allowing red meat irradiation, but urged Glickman to petition FDA for approval of low-dose irradiation for all ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.

Hot dogs, luncheon meats, marinated and other partially prepared meat and poultry products are not covered by the new rules, yet are becoming increasingly popular with convenience-minded consumers. Because these products can harbor harmful pathogens, the added "insurance" of irradiation could be a major benefit, said Boyle.
