Associations honor converters

Golden, CO-based Graphic Packaging Corp. won three Excellence Awards from the Paperboard Packaging Council (Alexandria, VA) for folding cartons, all made using the company's Composipac(TM) converting process.

The process begins with gravure reverse-printed oriented polypropylene film in seven colors. The film is metallized, then extrusion-laminated to recycled board.

Cartons produced at GPC's Lawrenceburg, TN, facility that won Excellence Awards were for a Calgon water softener, and for General Mills' Team Cheerios and Jurassic Park Crunch cereals.

GPC's work on the Team Cheerios cereals was also recognized by the Gravure Assn. of America (Rochester, NY) with a 1998 Golden Cylinder Award. Earning honors in the packaging catetgory for film printing, GAA says the printing "captured not only the details of the product inside, but provided the fidelity necessary to incorporate numerous photographic images." Besides this pack, GPC also earned GAA awards for its work on a Sanhua cigarette pack, and for a Dare Blueberry Cheesecake cookie bag.

Other Golden Cylinder Award winners were Westvaco's Consumer Product Div., for Jack Daniels cartons, and Seville Flexpack for Gardetto's snack foods' One of a Kind Hide-a-Winner package, which GAA said required 12 print stations and three layers of film.

Meanwhile, PPC's highest honor, the President's Award, went to the Rock-Tenn Co., for its Clinton, IA, plant's cartons for Hormel Foods' Marrakesh Express pastas and grains. The 24-pt double-kraft lined chipboard is printed in five colors.
