'Sewing' the truth on sterility

In Packaging World's coverage of the Top Packaging Awards of the Flexible Packaging Assn., some facts were erroneously reported about the suture package of Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon, Inc.

(Packaging World, March '96, p. 42). This was brought to our attention by Michael Pohle, director of packaging development at Ethicon.

In reporting on the new peelable suture package that offers benefits in moisture barrier and shelf life while reducing packaging waste, a quote was included that characterized the previous secondary wrap as not adding sterility, but only protection against rough handling. "Not only did I never make this statement," says Pohle, "it isn't true. The secondary wrap is a sterile barrier for the foil packet contained inside. This allows for the aseptic transfer of the inner foil packet into the sterile field." He also points out the secondary wrap serves multiple uses.

Pohle also took issue with our statement regarding the elimination of cuts in package handling. "Packaging that is constructed using aluminum must be handled with care to avoid being exposed to sharp edges that can cause cuts," he says. "Cuts can occur with packages containing metals such as aluminum, if not handled properly." PW regrets the inaccuracies.
