Flexible packaging price hikes?

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing a change in its New Source Review program that has the potential to be the most expensive rule to affect flexible packaging in the last 20 years, according to the Flexible Packaging Assn.

Under the proposed rule, any manufacturing facility would be required to install the most technically advanced pollution control equipment possible. According to the FPA, the rule change would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for each printing press, making it cheaper for some companies to shut down rather than buy the required equipment. The result could be significantly higher prices for such packaging materials. Also troublesome to converters, says FPA, is the implementation of the new National Ambient Air Quality Standards, which consist of more aggressive air pollution threshholds.
