Sealed without a kiss?

When Hamburg, Germany-based Beiersdorf wanted to improve the packaging for its Nivea Visage facial cleansing tissues, a Holland-based injection-molder developed a container using some sophisticated plastics.

Previously, Visage tissues had been packaged in a foil pouch with a self-adhesive pressure-sensitive label to reseal the package. However, the company wanted a more substantial package with an improved moisture barrier to retain the moisture in the tissues.

Ten Cate Plasticum developed the new polypropylene container with a local resin compounder that used Kraton G Evoprene™ made by Kraton Polymers, in a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). “Beiersdorf’s key priority was to achieve an almost airtight package to ensure the tissues retained moisture,” says Bas den Boer, an engineer for Ten Cate. “But the packaging also had to have a luxury appearance and incorporate an easy-opening system.”

The three-piece container comprises the body, a lid, and an inner lid that’s assembled with a silicon spring. By using the TPE compound integrated into the lid, it makes the closure between the lid and inner lid airtight, says den Boer. This, he points out, is the first time such a seal has been used in the cosmetics market. The closure between the lid and base is almost airtight, he says. To complete the package, Ten Cate decorates the container in-the-mold with a label of PP. —AO
