Pouch replaces Hawaiian Punch box

An unusual, shaped stand-up pouch is now bringing kids the taste of Hawaiian Punch in seven southeast states. Hawaiian Punch is a brand of Cadbury Schweppes plc, packed for Mott’s, Stamford, CT.

Patented by SaddleSprings Beverage Co. (Torrance, CA), the shaped 200-mL pouch is converted by Winpak (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada).

Contract packager Olmarc (Northlake, IL) fills, seals, and packs pouches in 10-count corrugated multipacks for shipment to southeastern states that Mott’s spokesman Chris Curran says represent the highest-consumption market for Hawaiian Punch.

Unlike some other pouched beverages, Hawaiian Punch uses a clear window to let the vibrant colors of the drinks show through. And the hourglass shape of the pouch allows it to fit easily into kid’s hands while they sip the beverage through the straw that’s applied to the back. Another kid-friendly attribute of this pouch is its easy-insert feature for poking the straw through the back of the pouch.

“During product testing, when we showed the pouch to our core market, kids from six to 12, their immediate response was how cool the new pack looks and feels,” pointed out Tim O’Brien, product manager at Mott’s.

Although Denise Lefebvre, Mott’s director of packaging engineering, declined to disclose the pouch structure, she reports that it’s pre-made and cold-filled by Olmarc on three new filling/sealing lines. The 10-pouch corrugated box sells for $2.69 to $2.89. (AO)
