Spanish university cooks up cinnamon-based packaging...

The University of Zaragoza, located in the Spanish region of Aragon, has developed an active paper packaging made from cinnamon that inhibits the growth of mold on bread.

Active paper "changes the condition of the packaged food product to extend its shelf life." The university's researchers "found that solid wax paraffin incorporating cinnamaldehyde-fortified cinnamon essential oil is an efficient antimicrobial coating for paper or board packaging." Madrid-based manufacturer, Rylesa-Repsol-YPF, produced the paper for the study.
