Unilever display shrinks footprint using Sonoco's design software

A redesigned floorstand wing unit for Vaseline Sheer Infusion body lotion reduces paperboard use by 50% without any loss in branding appeal in stores.

Decision-makers from many consumer packaged goods companies are walking the show floor at PACK EXPO looking for ideas on how to reduce their products' environmental footprint.

Those who venture to the lower level of the East Hall will find an intriguing example at Sonoco's booth, where the company is displaying its True Blue™line of sustainable packaging solutions and recycling services.

True Blue eco-friendly P-O-P displays, like the one Sonoco's Global Services division designed and produced for Unilever's Vaseline Sheer Infusion body lotion, are helping customers and their retail partners meet sustainability and sales goals. By redesigning an existing floorstand wing unit, Sonoco reduced the amount of paperboard required to produce the display by 50%, from 65.2 sq ft to 32.65 sq ft. The display accomplishes this reduction without sacrificing its ability to attract consumer attention.

The Vaseline display is the result of Sonoco's proprietary packaging design software to help consumer packaged goods companies reduce their packaging footprint by substituting or eliminating materials, down-gauging structures, and simplifying the package to improve recyclability.

"Our True Blue brand gives consumer product customers a one-stop shop for sustainable packaging solutions," says Jeff Schuetz, staff vice president, Global Technology, Consumer Packaging, at Sonoco. "By combining our True Blue line of products with our total packaging solutions capabilities, we're creating sustainable value for our customers."
