California coalition targets packaging labeling

The California Packaging Alliance is opposing a bill introduced in the California State Assembly that would require a blanket, statewide label on packaging to distinguish between what is “recyclable,” “compostable,” and “trash.”

The coalition, made up of consumer product companies, food and beverage manufacturers, container manufacturers, and other allied trade groups, says it means costly and often duplicative new labeling requirements for manufacturers that will only create confusion among consumers. Local recycling programs often differ on what packaging they accept and some areas do not have composting programs.
