Korea bows to U.S. pressure

Korea’s new country-of-origin labeling requirements for beef and pork products were due to take effect on January 1, but at the last moment, the Korean Government agreed to a request by USDA and the Office of the U.S.

Trade Representative to postpone implementation. At the least, the requirement would have meant a massive re-labeling job for U.S. processors and could have seriously limited their ability to ship beef and pork to Korea, a major export market. Country-of-origin labeling remains a controversial issue in both the United States and abroad. It remains to be seen if new country-of-origin labeling legislation will be introduced in the new Congress.
