Currently, members of the United Nations' World Health Organization must agree to either use standards established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) as national standards or provide scientific justification for stricter requirements. In a statement presented at the Codex meeting in June, IACFO called on Codex to among other things: * Issue standards for mandatory nutrition labeling * Develop standards for quantitative ingredient labeling of foods * Maintain standards for clear labeling of irradiated foods.
International food labeling laws
The International Assn. of Consumer Food Organizations (IACFO)--founded by the consumer advocacy groups CSPI, Japan Offspring Fund and the Food Commission UK--is urging that efforts to harmonize national food safety laws on an international basis lead to higher, not lower standards.
