A spin-off from Lucky(TM) Brand Dungarees, Lucky Brand Fragrances started reaching store shelves in October. The line uses unusual secondary packaging, spiral-wound composite cans, to carry through brand image.

"It's kind of a barber-shop feel," says Kristen Doman, director of marketing at the firm that developed the product, Cosmetics West, Manhattan Beach, CA. The company chose composite paperboard cans with a seamed-on metal end from Cin-Made (Cincinnati, OH) for both sizes, 1.7 oz and 3.4 oz, that it markets. The seamed-on metal ring at the top has threads in order to accommodate a threaded cap, which is made of aluminum and embossed with the brand logo. Glue-applied paper labels are 70# coated-one-side stock offset-printed in three colors by Ket-Moy (Hamilton, OH). Manufacturing, filling and packaging are handled by contract packagers. The line is sold in Nordstrom's and small specialty stores throughout the U.S. Suggested retail prices are $42 and $60. Cosmetics West admits that the composite can costs a bit more than a typical SBS carton. "But it's definitely worth it," says Doman. "We've gotten a lot of response because it's a little different than what's already out there."
