The U.S. Postal Service and Bell Incorporated announced May 30 that the more than 200 million courier envelopes that Bell manufactures annually for use by Postal Service customers now meet “Cradle to CradleSM” standards for environmental health and sustainability. To achieve the certification, every Bell Incorporated supplier that contributes to the manufacture of the Postal Service envelopes—including raw materials, ink, tape, tear string, and adhesive suppliers—went through a series of measurements and assessments, conducted by MBDC, a design firm founded in 1995 to promote and implement eco-effective products.

International Paper and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters have been awarded a 2007 Sustainability Award from the Specialty Coffee Association of America. The two companies received the award in honor of their joint creation of the ecotainer™ cup—the first hot paper beverage cup made from fully renewable resources. The ecotainer is lined with a bioplastic derived from corn, making it compostable under the proper conditions.

A new molded milk carton designed to replace plastic milk jugs was tested recently by a retailer in Suffolk, England. Both the molded carton, which is made of recycled corrugated board, and a bio-degradable inner bag are recyclable at curbside says developer Greenbottle Ltd.

In May, Tetra Pak Inc., Eureka Recycling, and the city of St. Paul, MN, launched a public education campaign to inform citizens about the addition of aseptic packaging to its curbside recycling program. City of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman challenged residents to start adding both milk cartons and juice boxes to their recycling.
