Grocery pack recycling grows

Bottle bills are a costly and inefficient means of recycling and addressing municipal solid waste management, said Katie Hornbarger, state affairs manager for the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) in testimony before the Connecticut Bottle Bill Task Force.

Connecticut is considering adding noncarbonated beverages to bottle bill requirements. Hornbarger cited source reduction efforts by manufacturers of grocery products, noting that while the U.S. population grew 14% between 1980 and 1993, grocery product packaging as a percentage of municipal solid waste fell from 15 to 12% during that time. In addition, grocery package recycling nearly doubled from 1980 to 1990 and rose another 30% from 1990 to 1993, the latest year for which data is available. These trends are likely to continue.
