Oregon exceeds plastic package recycling target

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced that the state's recycling rate for rigid plastic containers is expected to exceed its target by seven percent.

The 1991 plastics recycling law established standards for the rate of recycling (25% by 1995), reuse or recycled content. Dan Colegrove, manager of state affairs for the Grocery Manufacturers of America, Western Region, said the report "demonstrates the commitment by industry to provide packaging that meets the lifestyle demands of the '90's consumer. GMA members are committed to balancing packaging's primary responsibility of ensuring product safety and integrity with the competing demand for reduced, recycled or recyclable packaging." GMA supports strengthening the law, with an emphasis on source reduction.
