Ready to innovate? Strategies that work on tap for CP 08

Are you looking for contract packagers to help you find new and better ways to get packages with impact into stores?

Pw 6711 Jeff George

Improve time to shelf? Reduce costs? These results are possible with innovative approaches to packaging, and innovation is the theme of CP 08, the second annual Succeeding with Contract Packaging conference.

CP 08 will be Sept. 16-17, 2008 at the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg, in Schaumburg, IL.

Conference producers are Contract Packaging and Packaging World magazines, with the support of the Contract Packaging Association.

Jeff George, vice president of R&D at Quaker Oats Foods and Snacks, a division of PepsiCo, will kick off the conference Sept. 16 with what promises to be a dynamic keynote presentation—“Innovative Packaging as an Investment.” George has 20 years with PepsiCo, serving in capacities including director of packaging innovation. In his current position, George directs all innovation, product, and process efforts for Quaker Oats Foods and Snacks. He is responsible for how products, processes, and packaging work together.

George will outline the imperative for bringing new ideas into package development and pose questions that buyers and sellers of contract packaging services should ask to gauge each other’s ability to be innovative. Beyond that, he will offer ideas for looking differently at the traditional package creation and development process to uncover opportunities to create great packages within budget.

Other confirmed speakers include

• Douglas Miller, production and operations manager at Beauty Avenues/Bath & Body Works.  Miller will present “Designing for Manufacturability: Making Contract Packaging a Team Player.”

• John Helferich will expand on his well-received presentation at CP 07 about mass customization and packaging. Helferich, a Batten Fellow in the Darden School at the University of Virginia, is formerly vice president of research and development at Masterfoods.

• Daryl Madeira, director of marketing at Alcan Pharmaceutical Packaging, will co-present with John Gagliardi, principal packaging engineer, third party contract manufacturing, at GlaxoSmithKline, on the topic “Balancing Design with Production: Lessons in Pharmaceuticals.”

• Frank Leonesio, CEO, and Lyle Myers, president, Esio Beverage Co., will talk about their approach to “Managing Innovation in a Breakthrough Beverage System.”

• Kevin Leibel, president at Innovation Management, will discuss “Creating an Innovation Team: The Essential Steps.”

• Kevin Armour, vice president at Strategic Analysis Inc., will return to outline results of phase-two research in creating a “State of the Industry” report for the Contract Packaging Association.

As a value-added component to this year’s program, the afternoon sessions on Sept. 16 are slotted into concurrent tracks. One track will focus on secondary and display packaging, and the other track will explore sustainability issues and the impact of contract packaging.

In the secondary and display packaging track, Jack Ampuja will present “Packaging for Supply Chain Efficiency.” Ampuja is president of Supply Chain Optimizers and executive director of the Niagara University Center for Supply Chain Excellence. In the sustainability track, Jane Bare, research chemical engineer in the Sustainable Technology Division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will discuss “Quantifying Sustainability Through the TRACI Approach.”

CP 08 will also feature two panel discussions. For current program information, visit www.contractpackagingmag.com/cp08. The Web site is also the place to go for complete registration details.

CP 08 will open with a welcome reception on the evening of Sept. 15 at the hotel. For additional information on the conference, contact events manager Adriene Cooper at 312/222-1010 or [email protected].
