All signs are pointing to a fruitful 2007

CPA and neutral research firm move forward with ‘State of the Contract Packaging Industry Report' By Christopher Barry, communications manager, Contract Packaging Association

Pw 9088 Cpa Monitor 03

The Contract Packaging Association (CPA) has decided to develop the market research required to produce an annual “State of the Contract Packaging Industry Report.”

It is an ambitious ongoing project, one that should be produced by the CPA to be viewed as the definitive source of information on the size and scope of the service of contract packaging.

Other members of the CPA market research steering committee included Sean McKeon, Len Shaw, Gerry Donley, Phil Nader, and Paul Tomick.

Packaging Summit Expo and Conference slated for May 2007

The Packaging Summit Expo and Conference, focused on packaging innovation from leaders in the packaging industry, is scheduled for May 15 to 17, 2007, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont,
IL. Attendees of the Expo will:

• Discover packaging solutions while making valuable connections. The show floor will provide direct access to specialists in contract packaging as well as to top innovators in materials and containers.

• Learn by attending a fully integrated conference that will address packaging drivers, contract packaging's influence on business, new containers and materials options, packaging's global impact, and how packaging boosts a brand's image.

• Participate in live demonstrations on the show floor that illustrate “how it's done.”

• See award-winning packages. The show floor will spotlight the best packages in the world in the Hall of Packaging Excellence.

The Packaging Summit Expo and Conference is a “must attend” event for 2007. Exhibitor and attendee registration for the Packaging Summit Expo and Conference is available at www.pkgsummit.com or by calling 262/782-1900.

Contract Packaging Association Hall of Fame criteria set

The following criteria for admittance into the Contract Packaging Association Hall of Fame have been suggested and approved by the CPA board:

1. The individual must have a minimum of 20 years in the industry.

2. An individual's career must have significantly impacted the growth of both the association
 and the industry.

3. The individual must have demonstrated leadership and vision for the association
and industry.

4. The individual should be a pioneer or legend within the CPA and the industry.

5. It is further recommended that there should be a limit of one inductee per year, and that there need not be an inductee every year.

Prime candidates are those who have already made the above contributions and who may be in the “twilight” of their careers. The nomination of any candidate can be made by any member at any time. A qualified member committee of peers will review nominations.

The first inductee into the Contract Packaging Hall of Fame was made at the CPA Annual Meeting this past April in Orlando, FL. The recipient was Thomas Bacon, president and founder of the Contract Packaging Association. Bacon's tireless and endless work for the CPA has made the association the success it is today.

Schedule is tightened for CPA's 2007 Annual Meeting

In order to streamline next year's CPA Annual Meeting, the event—it will take place from March 29 to April 2, 2007, at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Tucson, AZ—will be tightened and reconfigured.

Open time will be kept to a minimum while events (such as the golf tournament and spouse programs) will be scheduled to more effectively frame business meetings. The restructuring will encourage members to attend the entire function without foregoing anything of substance while participating in external programs.

As an event, the CPA Annual Meeting provides the ideal venue for a healthy mix of education, networking, business development, and recreation. Information about the 2007 Annual Meeting can be found on the association's Web site, www.contractpackaging.org. Additional details will be posted regularly, so check back often.

CPA secures legal counsel Eric F. Greenberg, PC, has been retained to provide legal services for the
Contract Packaging Association. Greenberg has been particularly helpful in the complete redrafting of the CPA's bylaws and amendments, elections, articles of incorporation and a dissolution clause, and negotiations with two consortiums—power/energy and transportation—allowing members to purchase energy and transportation at a group rate that is lower than the rate at which members could purchase these services individually.

Six CPA members, headed by John Riley, an officer of the association, worked as a steering committee to commission Statistical Analysis Inc. (SAI), a third-party research firm, to conduct a two-phase survey. Part one of the survey will involve assembling information from current CPA members while part two will include an expanded list of 500-plus contract packagers not surveyed in part one. This collected and analyzed information will provide baseline data for the annual report.
