Game changer: Extreme Packaging designs 100 cpm into low cost wrapper

To get cost out and speeds higher, the shrink wrapping specialist has streamlined mechanical design, eliminated pneumatics and integrated all control and HMI functions into a single piece of hardware.

At PACK EXPO 2010, Extreme Packaging Machinery plans to change the market's cost/performance expectations with a 100 cpm servo wrapper costing significantly less than conventional designs.

Extreme's engineers simplified mechanical fabrication and replaced pneumatic cylinders, temperature controllers, PLC, HMI and all their separate software packages on its SAL (Servo Auto Length) series wrappers. The direct result is reduced cost and increased performance.

One hardware, one software, no air

The new control platform lowers the cost of ownership, from setup to remote diagnostic functionality. Based on Automation Studio, the integrated software environment from B&R Industrial Automation, all aspects of machine control were developed in the same program.

One B&R panel runs the program on a single processor, and it all resides on a Compact Flash disk. The new controller combines all control functions, including two PID temperature loops for the sealing process, in a single touchscreen operator panel. The micro PLC did not have the ability to perform temperature control, but the B&R panel does.

Replacing the pneumatic cylinders, two servos precisely control seal position, dwell time and pressure for the cross seal carriage and seal bar, synchronizing vertical and horizontal travel. Three AC variable frequency drives (VFDs) control infeed, side seal, and traveling cross seal belt.

Together, the controls upgrade increases speed from 70 up to 100 cycles per minute. The VFDs utilize digital communications, simplifying configuration and diagnostics. The servo drives also eliminate air lines, compressor, filtration and control wiring with an energy efficient alternative.

The new wrapper complements a full line of servo wrappers up to 7 axes and 200 cpm, as well as a complete line of shrink tunnels and infeeds.

About Extreme Packaging Machinery

Extreme Packaging Machinery manufactures high speed automatic wrappers, shrink tunnels and infeed systems, with design focused on ease of use, flexibility and low maintenance.

Extreme Packaging was founded in 1990 to service shrink packaging equipment, fro m training and consulting to rebuilding and performance enhancing retrofits, to infeeds, customized systems and fabrication of hard-to-find replacement parts.

From this deep, practical, hands-on experience the company recognized the packaging industry's unmet needs and introduced its first series of automatic shrink machinery in 1999.

With over 20 years specializing exclusively in shrink wrapping, Extreme Packaging has earned its place as the leading independent machinery supplier.
