More secure containers

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a new “smart box” program designed to encourage shipping companies to install electronic tampering sensors and to use reinforced one-use-only metal seals on steel box cargo containers.

The seals would be numbered, with the numbers relayed electronically to customs agents at U.S. ports before the containers’ arrival. Containers with the new security devices would receive quick processing at U.S. ports, while those without them would be subject to onerous, time-consuming inspection.
